Norwalk, CT is a culturally rich
and vibrant community located on the shores of Long
Island Sound. Originally founded in 1640, Norwalk
was formally incorporated in 1651.
Historically, Norwalk played a dramatic part in the
Revolutionary War. Nathan Hale sailed from here for
his spy mission on Long Island and legend has it
that the song “Yankee Doodle” refers to men from
Norwalk who “stuck a feather in his cap” (in this
case chicken feathers in their hats to distinguish
themselves from the enemy and avoid firing on their
own men).
A great part of the charm of Norwalk is found in the
many different neighborhoods that constitute this
eclectic and energetic city. From East Norwalk to
Cranbury, Silvermine to Marvin Beach, SoNo to West
Norwalk to Harborview.and Rowayton each neighborhood
has its own special character and ambience. Whether
it is known for antique homes in a country setting,
urban sophistication and nightlife or waterfront
vistas and related activities, each has its own
adherents. One is more likely to hear that someone
lives in “Silvermine” or “Harborview” than in
Norwalk itself. Such is the passion and pride
engendered in the residents of each of these
communities within the city.
Economically, Norwalk has seen a boom in commercial
properties and development in recent years.
Practically everything imaginable can be purchased
along the Post Road at the “big box stores”, while
several one-of-a-kind shops and individual merchants
continue to thrive in the city's various
neighborhoods. Office development has meant a steady
influx of employers and employees and has resulted
in continued growth in the area.
The Norwalk of today retains a sense of its early
history and continues to draw commerce and
recreation from its extensive waterfront. An active
oyster harvesting fleet as well as several
boatyards, marinas, beaches and parks provide a
constant hum of activity along the waterfront.
Residents of Norwalk also enjoy public access to
great 18-hole Golf at lovely Oak Hills Park. |
